As You Wish Fairy Tales Anthology Eloisa James 9780062276964 Books

This is one of my all-time favorite stories. Although With This Kiss was originally written as a serial, this is the complete collection. If you are familiar with Eloisa's previous books, you will recognize characters from The Ugly Duchess and Seduced By A Pirate. While familiarity with those tales do enhance the reading experience, it is by no means a requirement as this book works well as a stand alone. It is a rich, emotional tale that tugs at the heart strings and brings a glow of sheer joy to me each and every single time I pick it up.

I immediately understood and could commiserate with our heroine, Lady Grace Ryburn. She is your quintessential good girl. She has a sweet disposition and always follows the rules. No matter what, though, she is always overshadowed by her beautiful little sister. Said sister isn't a villain by any means, she is simply one of those stunning, wicked creatures who can't help but be the center of attention at all times. Grace is lovely, but she doesn't sparkle in quite the same way. In her life Grace has two passions: painting and Colin Barry, a childhood friend she grew up with. Colin has grown up to be a proud sea captain, powerful and heroic and everything a girl might dream of...although he keeps painful secrets from those he loves. After years of writing to her dear friend and loving him in silence, Grace is destroyed when, home on leave, he offers for her beautiful sister. She does what any other girl would do in a similar situation: she grits her teeth and painfully gets on with the job of living her life without him as a part of it.

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone and everyone who enjoys romance, love, hope or redemption.

As You Wish Fairy Tales Anthology Eloisa James 9780062276964 Books Reviews

From a young age, Grace loved Colin. He is the center of her world. She keeps these feelings close to her heart. While he's away in the navy at the time of war, she sends letters that keep him focused and strong and which helps him endure the horrors of war. When Colin finally returns and is discharged from the arm, we grow to understand his silent love, devotion and need that he has for Grace and Grace alone, (be still my heart).
I absolutely loved this book. I've been reading romance for 40 years or more. This is now my number one pick. I hope the author continues the saga with her next book. I look forward to reading it!
WITH THIS KISS is a novella that consists of the parts that were originally published separately and then collected into one book. This book is party of the Fairy Tales series and is connected with THE UGLY DUCHESS and SEDUCED BY A PIRATE. WITH THIS KIA tells the story of Grace Ryburn, the daughter of the characters in THE UGLY DUCHESS and Colin Barry, the adopted son of the characters in SEDUCED BY A PIRATE. Grace had been in love with Colin since childhood. She writes to him during his time in the navy and she helps him deal with his unhappiness, but when he returns to England, he asks to marry her younger sister. Grace gives up on him and instead agrees to marry someone else. When Colin returns injured, Grace realizes that she cannot deny her feelings and decides to make every effort to win him.

I liked this story. The first section is the best as it is the most emotional as Grace deals with the destruction of her dreams of Colin. The two other parts are more straightforward. I liked the glimpse into the lives of the characters introduced in the other books.

I really liked Grace as a character because she is loving and willing to do what makes Colin happy even if that means breaking her own heart. This novella is sweet.
Unlike other people, I read the description of this book and it CLEARLY states it's two of the Ebooks in one paperback. It even lists the two novellas on the dang cover of the book that you can enlarge and read for yourself. This kind of reminds me of back in the day when you'd mess up on an assignment and the teacher would tell you- "That's why you read the directions first"...well, read the discription before you shell out money. I don't get that, if you're going to buy something, don't you want to research closely what it is you're actually buying? I don't know, that's just common sense to me.

The book

The continuing stories of Captian Berry was SO much fun for me to find and read. I was very pleased that this Ebook was put in paperback form. I don't have an eReader or Tablet and have no intention of getting one, as I like books. The feel, smell, etc. I just like turning that page and dog-earing where I am as I read along. I guess that makes me old school, but it's what I prefer. When I saw that EJ had some novellas that accompanied some of her novels I was excited, only to then discover that most of them were for eReaders or Tablets only....and THAT upset me. I felt like I was missing out on the fun, so when I found this in paperback form with not just one novella, but two, I jumped at the chance to get it.

Seduced By A Pirate

Though this story was pretty short, it was SO nice to see Captain Berry fleshed out more and to get to know who this wife was that he had left so many years ago. I loved the parts with Captain Berry in EJ's book The Ugly Duchess and really was hoping for more of him than was in that book. This novella introduces Captain Berry's wife and the children she has acquired in his absence. The pace is pretty fast as far as their reconnection but I was expecting it to be so since it was a novella. I do wish there was a bit more of the romantic dance between them before they reconnected. It happened pretty quickly, with Phoebe practically throwing herself at Griffin after she had declared a chapter before that she wanted him to leave. All-in-all it was very nice to wrap up their story and I did enjoy it, even if I wish there was a bit more romance.

With This Kiss

This one was so interesting to me. Childhood friends falling in love, though one sooner than the other. I will say that the age difference of Grace and Colin was uncomfortable at points when they are children...as Colin is quite older than Grace, but it really was a good story. The torture Colin was under seemed very well meshed out and it was palpable to me in reading it. Grace came off as a true wall flower...a character trait I don't really connect with personally, and I do tend to prefer the heroines that are more out-spoken and well...ballsy. So I was happy when Grace finally found her backbone towards the end of the book. The laudanum induced de-virgination scene was a bit much for me personally though...it was just a bit silly. That and...EJ had a good set up going with Grace planning to seduce Colin and I was annoyed that that would play out. One might think it was to save time since the book was winding down, but it went on for a while after that while they were at the inn and finally told each other their truths and love, and well....they went at it for a while. It was a great story with Colin's experiences and the way it was written was magnificently done. I am a bit miffed that Grace's sister Lily's story wasn't really wrapped up, and yet the end talks of children everywhere...but never a mention of who Lily ended up with. The epilogue was written from the perspective of the eldest child that Grace and Colin had...10yrs from the time they got married, and there was this bit with a random wild, abused horse thrown in as well. I got the desire to use that bit to compare Colin to that abused horse, and the healing they gave each other but it was something that would have been better served in a full length novel and not a novella so it could be more fleshed out. Aside from that the story was a great one, and is probably one of my favorite that she's written thus far. I really enjoyed this collection of two of her novellas, and I DO hope that EJ's publisher will make more of her eReader/Tablet novellas available for us die hard book readers to enjoy.
